BLOG UPDATE

We called a meeting for all of our group members in our media lesson 30/01/2013. We needed to discuss what we need to do in order to complete our coursework before the deadline on 13/02/2013. We discussed how our lack of time management has resulted in us not getting the final product finished, we then spoke and structured how we would go about tackling the issues we have had.

Goodwins conventions of music video

Goodwin has identified a number of key features in music videos. They are:

- A relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the lyrics.
- A relationship between the music and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the music.
- Genre-related style and iconography present.
- Multiple close-ups of the main artist or vocalist.
- Voyeurism often plays a major part, especially in relation to females.
- Intertextual references to other media texts may be present.

He says that music videos are often constructed by the link between the visuals and the song plus the artist. Relationships are built between these in the video, and the close-ups of the artists gives them the representation and publicity they require. Voyeurism is used to increase the video’s attractiveness, particularly to males, whilst intertextuality is often employed in humorous videos.

Most or some of these features are seen in music videos dependant upon the genre. In relation to our product and genre, A relationship between the lyrics and visuals will be included as it fits under the alternative pop/rock genre in which this is commonly seen. Close ups of the artist will also be included as in rock music it is common to see the artist performing in the video.

Finalised magazine advert

This is the finalised magazine advert. We stuck with the double page spread as the separation down the middle emphasises the break up in the relationship. The line which is more clear on the males side shows that he is more in the wrong with the break up and also adds to the idea that the woman has more of the power. The writing which says 'somebody that i used to know' is on there eye line so its as if they are both saying that they used to know each other, which is in fact the case as you can see in the video. we added the 'out know' and what platforms it is on to make the advert seem much more real. We also have Play.com and itunes as a sponsorship to also add to the realism of the advert.

1st draft of ancillary product

This is our 1st draft of the magazine advert; I personally like this idea of the separation which was part of our initial idea as it shows a clear separation between the two actors (which are both in the video). As a group we saw the line near to the left as a problem as it doesn’t fade like the bottom of the poster does. I personal like this line as it is more on the males side showing the dominance of the female character. I believe it also shows that the split up as shown in the video was down to the male character and makes the audience sympathise with the woman on the left.

Magazine advert research

The Verve are an alternate rock band (so are the same genre as the artist I am doing Gotye) A you can see the title and song name is the most dominant in the advert, tis is because it is in the centre and spans over the top third in black bold writing over a lighter background. We are thinking of included this kind of titleing in our product so it can make the artist name and song name stand out the most. It also has the details of where to buy the song and the platforms you can buy it in, this should be included in every advert s it helps with the sales of the music track as the audience know exactly where to get it from. The background colour black and white is also a common colour scheme seen in rock/alternate rock music. The black and the white both juxtapose each other as they are both opposites and it makes the advert stand out much more than if it was just normal coloured.

The Maccabees are an indie rock band which is a similar genre to Gotye. This advert unlike the other one is a bit more abstract. This can be commonly seen in rock music as it is an abstract genre with technical instrumental playing involved so this can most usually be emulated into there own style. The big bod white text is still easily recognisable over the blue background. Bold writing that stands out seems to be a common thee in magazine adverts so this is something we will most certainly look at including in our idea. This title also stands out as it is once again, similar to the other advert, takes up the dominant part of the top third.

All of our group making individual contributions to our final products of Ancillary products and film.

We discussed that as a group to keep in time with deadlines we would each assign ourselves a task, This consisted of, the magazine advert, Digi-pak and editing to our film all in light of feedback. We all used our different attributes to help gain a finished product, with each of us still having an input into each product.
